June Skin in Focus - Vitamin A

Friday, June 01, 2012
As skin ages, it has a tendency to slow down skin cell production. Retinol (Vitamin A) has exfoliation properties that slough away dead skin cells to allow new ones to grow. Regular usage restructures the skin and encourages continual regeneration. Retinol induces exfoliation, allowing skin cells "to function normally and continue regular cell renewal."

Skin loses elasticity over time, making way for the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Used a few nights per week, retinol will improve signs of ageing by aiding the production of collagen, one of the essential building blocks of youthful skin. As collagen is replenished and old skin cells are shed, facial discoloration reduces dramatically, fine lines recede and skin begins to reveal a softer, smoother texture. Collagen production slows down as the years fly by, thankfully, retinol ensures that new collagen keeps forming.

Vitamin A can resurface the skin dramatically and due to fresh new skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin, it can be more prone to sunburn. You must always use and SPF 30+ each and every day if you are planning to incorporate this fabulous ingredient into your skin care regime.

May Skin in Focus - Vitamin C

Thursday, May 03, 2012
Vitamin C , also known as L -ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbal phosphate or Tetra Hexyldecly Acorbate is one of the most effective ingredients to use topically on the skin for anti-aging. At the correct Ph and strength, Vitamin C is one of the very few ingredients that has the ability to absorb into the deepest layers of the skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that slows the rate of free- radical damage -- free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C helps synthesise new collagen and elastin and helps to reduce pigmentation and age spots.

Baby Skin Care - Baby acne / Hormone rash / Milla

Wednesday, April 04, 2012
By Kim Scott

Having just had my delightful new baby girl “Willow Scott” I thought I would write a short blog to share my first hand experience with Baby Acne or “Milk Pimples” as they are commonly referred as. This is my 2nd child and first experience with baby acne.

At one week of age Willow developed pimples which presented themselves red and angry over her entire face (See Image 1). She was born with Milia which is common in newborns. These leisions are tiny, white spots that appear, usually across the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead or around the eyes. Milia looks raised, but if you touch them they will feel smooth, however as you can see from the photos Willows were inflamed, red, rash like & she had pimples combined with Milia, which looked just like teenage acne.
I had read before that it's the mother's hormones, which are still circulating in the baby's system, that cause the spots, but also knew that her pimples were not causing any pain or discomfort beyond mild itchiness, however they looked dreadful and it was more me that was concerned.
As an aesthetician “THE SKIN” is my passion and I really wanted to help her.

At The Skin Corrective Centre we have had many clients report back to us on the famous bod for bubs “miracle dry skin balm” however, I can now say from first hand experience that this range on newborns skin is nothing short of incredible. I decided to use my daughter  as a case study to hopefully help other mothers out there avoid TOPICAL STERIODS (cortisone creams) which can in some cases thin the skin and often lead to other secondary skin responses.

Treatment for Baby Acne

2 products:  Miracle Dry Skin Balm & Splish Splash
  • 1 x per day use “Splish Splash” wash in bath on affected area and rinse off with water.
  • 3 x per day apply “Miracle Dry Skin Balm” to affected areas, leave on.
Continue this treatment until skin is clear.

For those of you that may not be aware, The Skin Corrective Centre stocks an Organic Range of baby skin care products which we do also recommend for adults from time to time, not just for babies. As Willow was only 1 week old I really did not want to use anything with nasty ingredients. For me, it was about using active plant extracts, less than .3% essential oils to get results and also about excluding ingredients that I knew were irritants to skins of any age.

Helpful hints:

As mums I feel we really need to focus on what‘s NOT in our babies skincare products. Unfortunately to this day there are some very large well known companies that still contain the ingredients listed below and market them for sensitive skins, why?.... I do not know! Only a few of the bod for bubs products even require a preservative and the company has chosen to use a food grade preservative (hydroxymethyl- glycinate) we assure you, is safe on baby’s skin.

Examples of nasty’s in baby care products include:
  • Fragrance
  • Petrochemicals
  • Sodium lauryl sulphates
  • Artificial preservatives
  • Alcohol
  • Parabens
  • Animal products
  • Astringents
You won’t find any hidden nasties in the bod for bubs range; all products are free from animal products, petrochemicals and parabens. Specifically blended to nourish delicate skin, all scents are 100% pure essential oils blended according to safety guidelines.

Extra Tips & Hints

Treatment for Nappy Rash (2 products:  Cowboys and Itchy Bums & Splish Splash)
  • 3 xs per day apply salt water solution to affected area with cotton ball let dry.
  • After every nappy change apply a generous amount of” Cowboys and itchy bums” (contains Zinc and natural healing ingredients)
  • Wash the area thoroughly with Splish Splash wash (ph balanced  and contains no fragrance)
I hope this helps mums with their child’s skin concerns. Please don’t hesitate to email ATT: Kim @ tsccdubbo@yahoo.com.au   with any questions or call The Skin Corrective Centre on 68856349.

February Skin in Focus - Sunscreen!

Wednesday, February 01, 2012
When buying a sunscreen, is important to achieve an adequate physical block from UVA and UVB damage. Look for ingredients such as Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide. Chemical blockers also prevent UVA damage with ingredients listed such as methoxycinnimate and octyl methoxydibenzolmethane. Generally the difference between a supermarket SPF30+ and a Salon SPF30+ may be, that the ingredients such as Zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide are microfined for a better application. They may be void of chemical blokers that cause irritation and skin sensitivity. They may even have added key ingredients to benefit the health of the skin. A good quality sunscreen is your number one anti-ageing product and should be the first purchased above all others.

IPL Explained

Thursday, June 23, 2011
Intense Pulsed Light [IPL] is a popular non invasive treatment used to permanently reduce unwanted hair and improve many skin conditions. IPL uses specific wavelengths in the visible light spectrum measured in nanometres, which are absorbed into melanin (the dark pigment in your hair and skin) and haemoglobin (the red colour in your blood vessels). This light converts to heat, which damages the target cell whilst leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

A cold gel is usually applied to the area to be treated, and you will be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. The smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied. You may feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a small rubber band. The appearance right after treatment is similar to what you will see after a good exercise workout. The flushing and redness will last from a few minutes to several hours after treatment. If your skin is quite loose you may experience some swelling. The brown age spots and uneven pigmentation will turn much darker after treatment and will flake off within 3 to 10 days.

Treatment is generally administered in a series of 6 to 12 sessions that provide excellent long-term results, minimal adverse effects and high satisfaction. Each treatment takes about twenty minutes. Depending on the number of conditions you are treating, and the severity of the individual problem, a series of six to12 treatment sessions may be recommended. You can return to work the same day and resume all your daily activities. In some cases for minor capillaries only one treatment is required.
